Air Source Heat Pumps

Air source heat pumps are the most efficient form of electric heating. For one kW of electricity they can produce 3kW of heat.

Air source heat pumps comprise an external box that is similar to an air conditioning unit and has minimal noise levels. A new cylinder and controls are also required.

It works like a fridge - pumping heat from the colder area to the warmer area. It can operate even if the outside temperature drops to -15°, although it is more efficient at higher temperatures.

Air source heat pumps are suitable for both existing buildings and new build and do not involve any ground works. They can provide heat to existing hot water and heating systems, but may require larger radiators to be fitted. With any heat pump the thermal insulation of a property should be maximised.

The heat pump harvests heat in the external air by using it to evaporate refrigerant which then releases its heat when it condenses inside the hot water cylinder.

As well as saving on existing fuel bills our heat pumps are installed by qualified and accredited installers so will qualify for the Renewable Heat Incentive that will be adopted in April 2011. The consultation document is recommending a payment of 7.5p per kWh of heat generated

Proposed Renewable Heat Incentive for Air Source Heat Pumps:

  • Less than 100kW 4.5p / kWh
  • 100+ kW 3.2p / kWh
